Burlesque Costumes

Ah yes, the Queen of Halloween has been compared to Mae West a time or two- you know lusty, busty and blonde with a salty mouth and the attitude to match. So, would it shock anyone that burlesque costumes are one of my favorites? Silly underlings, of course they are! Whether you have the same zippy bite as Ms. West or you’re a little bit of a shy gal, pulling on a burlesque costume can give you the right frame of mind and you will be shocked completely at how sexy you feel, instantly.

Before you run out and pick the burlesque costume, consider the event and the activities that you will be doing- you want to be flirty and fun, with just a little dash of zest. You do not, however want to really flash or scare anyone. Secondly, my precious ones, I want you to search your soul- if you cannot pull yourself together and be comfortable in burlesque costumes, then start your search all over again. If you will be wearing a jacket, coat or (gasp!) a tablecloth over the top of your great costume all night, you are better off looking for something different. Burlesque costumes require a little bit of chutzpah, after all. You can’t stay bashful and shy if you are wearing pearls, lace and feathers with lots of red. Make sure that you know your own limits before you even make this choice.

When you start looking at burlesque costumes, start thinking about strip tease, not stripper. The difference between the two is simple: strippers wear next to nothing and then pull it all off, strip tease is just that- a tease, in essence nothing ever gets revealed.  One of the best burlesque costumes is the high slit skirt with the low cut top, just enough to give a little flash of silky, shimmery skin. Make sure that you have beaded fringe, or some other adornment to set you apart and always remember to add in a little playful touch to your burlesque costumes as well. Oh, and if you can vamp it up like Mae West, do so, taking your cue from some of her very best lines. My favorite: “It ain’t the men in your life, honey; it’s the life in your men.
