Beetlejuice Costume

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice! Okay, so I just broke a major rule, but that’s just the kind of gal that I am. Reckless. Not really good with the rules. Oh, and horribly amused by Michael Keaton in Beetlejuice. Quick movie lesson here: two perfectly nice people die and then are forced to come back to haunt their former home. Horrible people, and their slightly dark but still perfectly nice daughter move into the home. The ghosts try to haunt the family but they fail miserably so in desperation they turn to: Beetlejuice, the ghost with the most, among other things. Played gleefully and way over the top by Michael Keaton, he is a bloated, semi-scary creature who has many different versions to delight the most macabre among us.

The basic Beetle Juice costume is black and white, with a bat tie and should be ratty looking as possible- after all he has been dead for quite a while. In addition, your Beetlejuice costume should be topped off with really horrifying makeup. If you want to “glam” up the look, opt for the really cheesy tux that BeetleJuice dons when he tries to force his attentions on the house owner’s young daughter, played by Winona Ryder.

Other costume options from this movie, one of the funniest ever produced by Tim Burton, include the frumpy clothing of the newly departed couple, the gorgeous red wedding gown that is forced upon the young woman and of course, an assortment of the dead in the afterworld waiting room- you can even create some of your own in this case- but there were plenty of sight gags and special effects that you should consider.

Attitude is of course the best part of the Beetlejuice costumes: make sure that you are over the top obnoxious if you are portraying the lead character, sweet and demure for the Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin characters and sweet but confused for the Wynona Ryder character.
