Darth Vader Costume

Well, hello, tall, dark and sinister! Where have you been all of my life? Destroying planets and tormenting innocent ‘droids, no doubt. Oh, okay, you “forced” it out of me- I have a little bit of a soft spot for Darth Vader. If you are looking for a great and totally non-nerdy costume to wear, (even for a convention) Darth Vader is the way to go. Make sure however you keep a few things in mind when looking for the best Darth Vader costumes.

The Helmet

The helmet on Darth Vader costumes should fully encase the head. If you are opting for the plastic mask that sits on your face and fastens to your head with an elastic band then you should be swatted with a light saber unless you are four years old. (A four year old can be forgiven a slightly cheaper Darth Vader costume, mainly because he will a)grow out of it or b) totally destroy it before it is time to actually wear it.) Adults should opt for a higher end costume that includes a full, head enclosing mask.

The Cloak

Okay, chintzy is not the way to go here. If you did not get a full costume and think you can simply sub a vampire costume for Vader’s cloak, guess again, buddy. Number one, there is no flash of red on Darth Vader. Number two, its not like we won’t all know what you did. Do it right or do not do it at all.

The Costume

In most of the best costume shops (on and off line) the Darth Vader costumes have the complete look so you do not have to add anything. However, in some cases you might find the helmet and cloak only. If this is the case, make sure that you are wearing plain, pure black clothing, including your shoes. After all, it is highly unlikely that Vader would care anything about the Hard Rock Café.

The Accessories

While as an adult it is not necessary, you might be interested in having the right accessories for your Darth Vader costume. A light saber is a good choice, however there are optional voice changers that can be very amusing at a party as well. Just be careful and don’t scare the kids. Well, maybe just a little.
