The Gypsy Costume: I See a Handsome Stranger in Your Future
When the Queen of Halloween was just a little girl, (the Princess of Halloween, to be exact) she often dressed as a gypsy, not only because she liked the gypsy costume but because it was part of her heritage. In addition, the Queen’s Mother often threatened to sell the Queen and the Queen’s sister to the gypsies for $1.99 a pound. Don’t judge. In addition to being the Queen of Halloween, I am, admittedly, a right royal pain in the patoot most of the time. In honor of my childhood memories and the fact that this is still one of my favorite costumes, the Queen is going to help you either buy or make your very own gypsy costume.
How it is Done From a Child’s Standpoint
Call the Queen a genius or a costume savant, but as a child, she had a gift for creating costumes out of practically nothing and you can do the same for your own gypsy costume. Start with a full, long skirt, to the ankles preferably. If you have any skirts that fit in with the peasant skirt style from a few years ago, it is perfect. Don’t worry about color choices just yet, but the brighter the color, the better it will work. If you are never going to need the skirt or it has stains, you can quickly and easily dye it to any color you would like. To the skirt, add sashes or bandanas in various bright colors. If you can find them, use jingly coins, thin chains and small bells to make your gypsy costume jangly and mysterious as well.
Finish the costume with an off the shoulder blouse and a colorful scarf for your hair. Gold hoop earrings are also a must.
Finding the Right Gypsy Costume for You
If you do not have the time or the inclination to bother trying to make a gypsy costume, you can buy your own from a local costume shop or online. When you do choose to buy yours, make sure that you read the costume carefully so that you know exactly what is included and what you might need to buy to complete your look. For instance, your costume could have everything except for gold earrings in some cases while a more basic costume might only be the skirt, blouse and head scarf.
