The Women’s Indian Costume

Indian Costume

While most people cannot name more than a few of the female Indians who played major roles in history, they can certainly think of how they looked. Many people love to wear the Indian costume during Thanksgiving celebrations and many adults still make that choice for Halloween and other dress up events. If you are looking for a cute costume that is a little different from the typical, then women’s Indian costumes might be the right look for you.

If you are not able to find the right dress for your women’s Indian costume, you can make your own. If you are not handy with a needle and thread, you can start with a brown or tan suede dress and add a bit of fringed trim to the bottom hem. Beading can also be added if you would like. Most of the costume shops and online sites have wonderful versions of the women’s Indian costumes however, in a variety of price ranges. The right look will be slightly loose fitting and should hit right at the mid thigh area. If you are a little more modest, you can go a little longer if you would like.

In addition to the right dress, you will have to have the right hair style. A dark wig with two braids is perfect, however if you have the natural hair for it, then you can go natural. (There were no blonde Indians, I am afraid, however if you do go with your light hair you could introduce yourself with your Indian name, Dances with Hair Dye). Adding a feather or beads to your braids adds an authentic touch.

Finally, your shoes should be moccasins, hopefully in a color that will match your indian costume. If you cannot find moccasins or are unwilling to pay for them (although they are great, year ‘round shoes) you can wear brown colored shoes in other styles as well. Just be sure that you don’t wear cowboy boots!
