Party Costumes: Fitting the Theme Without Being Too Obvious
No matter what kind of theme party you are going to be going to, it is a safe bet that there will be several repeated costumes in attendance. The most popular and obvious choices will be made for the majority of these party costumes with no one reaching deeper inside of the movie, story or genre to find the often overlooked characters that have just as much to offer as the main characters.
Horror Party Costumes
If the theme of the party is horror, especially horror movies, it is a safe bet that there will be more than a few vampires, werewolves and Frankenstein monsters in attendance. It is also safe to assume that Jason Voorhies, Freddy Kreuger and Saw will also be there. However, there are millions of other horror party costumes that can be worn. From classic B movies, there is the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Mummy and of course, the Brain. Dress as Vincent Price and be the master of the macabre. A final suggestion here: be a clown (clowns are scary, ask anyone) and make sure that you amp up the fright factor a little with just a few touches like yellowed or fanged teeth and slightly darker clown clothing.
Famous Movies
If you throw a movie theme, most of the party costumes that you see will be the main characters. Take Gone With the Wind, for instance: you will have Rhett Butler, Scarlet O’Hara and Melanie and Ashley Wilkes, but where are the other fabulous characters from the movie? Where is Rhett’s special lady friend? Where are the carpet baggers? Where is Mr. and Mrs. O’Hara or Scarlett’s sisters?
If you are invited to a theme party but you want your party costumes to stand out and be noticed, you have to look a little deeper, but if you are okay comparing what you are wearing to five or six other people, then you are golden.
Interesting Themes
A friend chose to have an interesting theme and the great party costumes that came from it were phenomenal. She wrote down several phrases and/or questions on a slip of paper with the invitation and told everyone that their party costumes should fit the phrase or answer the question. Everyone really got into the spirit of things and at the end of the night everyone revealed their phrase or question. Such great fun and such beautiful party costumes!
