Gangster Costumes – Maybe You’ll Get Him in a Suit After All
A friend has announced the desire to have a few themed costume parties throughout the year. The first one, centered on a rather drab and obscure theme, saw no-one dress up, no-one eating the weird food and everyone completely bombed on the potent, but unidentifiable punch drink. This time out, it is a better theme and it is more likely that everyone will dress up, at least to some degree. This party theme is the gangsters of the Twenties and you know how men of all ages feel about them!
The best thing about gangster costumes is simple: most of them are meant for men. That’s right, boys, you are not going to come up with the excuse that there is nothing really cool for you to wear- most of the really good stuff is for you! Another bonus: most gangster costumes are centered around really cool clothes like suits, silk ties and fedoras! Awesome!
The Basics of Most Gangster Costumes
Back in the day, the average gangster wanted to not only fit in with polite society, but also wanted to portray himself as a legitimate business man as well. That meant wearing nice suits and ties and if you read the history of any of the more famous gangsters, you will find that they were interested in more than just “a” suit, they wanted the nicest and most elegant. After growing up dirt poor, most of these fellows got a little taste of money and developed a major taste for the finer things in life.
The first thing you will need then is a gangster suit, preferably a silky, pin striped suit, a little more flamboyant than what you would ordinarily wear. Make sure that it fits you well and if need be, give the shoulders a little padding, so that you have a nice, broad shouldered appearance.
After you get the suit on, gangster costumes depend on some really great accessories to really make them pop. First off, a silk tie and handkerchief for the pocket. You can dress the same as a group of friends, all wearing the same color tie, so that everyone knows which gang you are in. Next, a nice fedora is a great touch to wear, especially if you pull it down over one eye in a menacing way. Your shoes should be black and super shiny and finally, you should have a toy tommy gun. If you have access to a violin case, bring that with you as well. Perfect!
