Little girls (and some big girls too) like to dress up. They like to put on glittery, sparkly makeup, lots of twinkling jewels and be fairies, princesses and sometimes, fairy princesses. Letting your little girl’s fantasies run wild does not always have to be difficult, nor does it always have to be expensive. Want to know some secrets and tips for the best fairy and princess costumes for little girls and beyond? Ssh, don’t tell Tinkerbell that I told you, but here goes:

With every fairy costume, the biggest focus will be the wings. You could be wearing just a simple nightgown and still be a great fairy with good wings. The wings should be big, but not overpowering, sheer and of course, sparkly. Matching the color of the wings to the outfit is a plus, but necessary as long as they do not clash. (Wings and wand should match, however.)

For a tight budget, buy the wings and wand to match a dress (or fancy nightgown) the child already owns and go from there. You can always play up the makeup and other items without having to go overboard on what they are wearing.

Glitter and sparkle is key: if you can add glitter or sparkle to something, it is instantly: fairy. Make sure to include some safe, facial glitter to complete the look.

Of course, some little girls would prefer to be a princess rather than a fairy, and that may be just as simple and budget friendly to do. Princesses only need:

A great tiara, maybe a scepter and of course, some princess type jewelry as well. If you don’t have costume jewelry of your own, check out yard sales or flea markets for some that would be suitable not only for Halloween but year round dress up play as well. After all, a little girl should feel like a princess every day.

A great dress up dress. Again, yard sales, tag sales and flea markets may be the best place to find cast off pageant and formal dresses that while possibly not fitting the child perfectly can be a great basis for a number of costume ideas. (A really good dress can be ready for princess or fairy wear with just a quick change of accessories.)

Fairy or princess, it is all just a matter of which has the wings and who gets the crown- and if your child gets elected Fairy Princess, lucky her; she gets to wear them both!
